Transition Plan: Shifting to Independent Learning (4-Week Plan)
This plan gradually gives your son more control over his learning while still maintaining structure. Each week, you’ll introduce small changes to help him build decision-making skills, self-motivation, and problem-solving abilities.
📅 Week 1: Introduce Small Choices & Exploration Time
✅ Goal: Start letting him make simple choices in his daily routine.
🔹 What to Do:
- Give him 2–3 options instead of deciding for him.
Example:
✅ “Do you want to do typing practice first or Scratch coding first?”
✅ “Would you rather read about dinosaurs or space today?” - Introduce 30 minutes of Exploration Time daily.
- Provide STEM kits, books, and web apps.
 - Let him explore anything he finds interesting.
 - No strict outcomes—just discovery!

 - Start using the “What do you think?” approach instead of giving answers immediately.
- Him: "Why does the moon change shape?"
 - You: "Good question! How do you think we can find out?"

📅 Week 2: Let Him Plan Parts of His Day
✅ Goal: Get him involved in planning his own learning schedule.
🔹 What to Do:
- Let him decide the order of his daily activities.
✅ “Do you want to do your learning before or after lunch?”
✅ “Would you rather do one big project today or two small ones?” - Introduce a Challenge Board with 5–7 tasks.
- Each day, he picks 1 or 2.
 - Examples:
- "Build a paper bridge that can hold a book."
 - "Write a funny story using only 10 words."
 - "Find 3 ways robots are used in Singapore."

 - Start a "What I Learned Today" notebook where he writes or draws 1 thing he found interesting.
 - Let him research one small question per day (using YouTube, Google, or books).

📅 Week 3: Increase Self-Directed Learning
✅ Goal: Let him take more responsibility for choosing topics and projects.
🔹 What to Do:
- Have 1 "Free Learning" day per week where he picks everything he wants to do.
 - Give him weekly goal-setting responsibility.
✅ “What’s one thing you want to learn by the end of this week?”
✅ Help him break it into smaller steps. - Start a "Mini Expert" project:
- He picks one topic (e.g., AI, space, or marine life).
 - He spends 10–15 minutes per day exploring it.
 - At the end of the week, he teaches you something about it!

 - Let him make more mistakes without immediate correction.
✅ “That didn’t work—want to try another way?”
📅 Week 4: Give Him Full Ownership Over One Area
✅ Goal: Help him fully take charge of one part of his learning.
🔹 What to Do:
- Let him fully control one subject or project.
✅ He picks a topic and decides how to learn it.
✅ He sets his own timeline and method (watching videos, experimenting, or reading). - Ask reflection questions instead of correcting mistakes.
✅ “What do you think went well?”
✅ “What would you do differently next time?” - By the end of the week, let him present something new he learned in any format (drawing, a short talk, a LEGO model, etc.).

📌 Final Thoughts
By the end of this 4-week transition, he will:
✅ Make small decisions daily about his learning.
✅ Feel more in control while still having structure.
✅ Be able to set and follow his own learning goals.
✅ Be comfortable figuring things out on his own.
